Twones reinvents itself and releases the Music Bar
Dutch music service releases new tool to bookmark all online music
Twones - the 'Delicious x StumbleUpon for music', reinvents itself and releases the Music Bar: a light and simple browser add-on via which you can bookmark, share and discover all online music. When installed you can bookmark music on thousands of supported websites, share it with your friends in Twones or on services like Twitter and Facebook, scrobble your online plays to Last.fm and discover new sites with great hand-picked content.
"Twones has the web both as its player and catalogue" says co-founder Tim Heineke. "Instead of building our own catalogue and get into expensive licensing we looked at the web and saw that there were already thousands of great blogs, websites, label and artist pages out there. On these sites you can find great music in the right context. All these sites serve their own niches and genres and have tastemakers curating the noise".
Until now, the only thing that wasn't possible yet was to bookmark and share this music, let alone to discover it easily. Music was stuck in the browser. The Music Bar aims to be the glue between this all. With it, users can see their own and their friends' music bookmarks in a nifty sidebar. Also, playing the music will now always happen on the URL where it was discovered and bookmarked. Heineke: "This way we pay our respect to the original sites and users will experience the music in its original context. Every genre and niche has its own tastemakers. They are bloggers, DJs and label owners posting music and writing about it. Their added context cannot be replicated easily".
"It's a great start" says the other co-founder Diederik Martens, "and there is a lot to come in the new year. Twones turns your browser into a player with the world's largest catalogue. Blogs and artist websites now function as a streaming site within the Twones network. Instead of music sites being places where you read about music or download it, you can now turn them into streaming sites and share the music with the world with our Music Bar".
The Music Bar can be downloaded and used for free while in private Alpha.
